Motown

The name "Motown" comes from the name of the record company "Motown Records", which became the first label promoting black performers in the pop music market. The label in 1959 was founded by producer Berry Gordy. He noticed that even the most talented African-American musicians were squeezed out to the side of the US music industry: all the big labels at that time belonged to whites, and on radio stations "racial" music was strictly quoted. "Motown Records" became the ideal factory of hits: it united many talented authors and at the same time directed artists and producers. The first achievement of the label was Barrett Strong's song "Money (That's What I Want)", which became a national hit in the early 1960s. It was followed by "Shop Around" by Robinson and The Miracles and "Please Mr. Postman "band The Marvelettes, which reached the top of the charts. The songs recorded in the Motown studio are recognizable: it's always a mixture of R & B, soul and pop rhythms. Most of the songs were recorded with the participation of two drummers and three or four guitarists, on many records you can hear a tambourine. The famous "Motown" sound spread far beyond Detroit: it was copied by European and British collectives of that time. The most famous performers of Motown are Marvin Gay, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Martha and the Vandellas, The Miracles, The Supremes, The Four Tops, Jackson 5. Every weekday is a new playlist in the "Genre of the Day" rubric. Here and in our telegram-channel: t.me/ya_musicgenre.
